Growers of the No. 1 Tea Brand in Papua New Guinea

In the Waghi Valley, Carpenter Estates owns and operates 4 tea plantations, each with its own factory. These properties were developed from phragmites swamp country in the mid 1960’s. At that time, almost all the equipments used, was air freighted into the valley, as these were the days before the road system in the highlands was fully developed. The rich soil and ideal climate conditions of the Waghi Valley contribute to the success of these tea plantations, which are rapidly promoting Papua New Guinea’s reputation as a leading producer of quality tea to meet a growing demand throughout the world. Our tea is grown without the use of any chemical pesticides, a situation that does not prevail in any other tea producing country.

The WR Carpenter Tea Plantations

Carpenter Estates produces tea of the best quality in the region and compares favourably with teas of Indian, Indonesian and African origin. Carpenter’s tea factories manufacture tea of the CTC (or Cut, Tear and Curl) process, also known as a ‘Natural’ type of manufacturing. The tender leaves and buds are harvested from fields either by hand or machine and initially withered in large withering troughs and exposed to a natural withering process without the help of hot air to enhance the cup character and to reduce the surface and internal moisture content, inducing a change in the leaf chemistry. The withered leaf is then fed through machines known as rotovanes to prepare the leaf for the CTC process.

All teas are packed in paper sacks for export worldwide and in retail packs, loose and in tea bags for the local market , NN1, our national brand own more than 90% of the market share in Papua New Guinea.

All teas are packed in paper sacks for export worldwide and in retail packs, loose and in tea bags for the local market utilising MAI SA machines. With the growing demand in export markets, in particular Asia and the Pacific Island regions, the factory will soon be undergoing expansion plans to fulfil this.
